Famous Bollywood movies of 2016

Hello friends, thank you for loving my last year’s Bollywood movies article. As we all know Hindi movies are largely loved by the people around the world and here I present you the new list of 2016's popular movies. 2016 was the year of biopics and sports based movies for Bollywood. Many other movies released with high expectations, some with superstars and big productions but few succeeded and many crashed.

Year opened with Wazir- Staring Amitabh Bachchan, Farhan Akhtar, John Abraham, Aditi Hydari Rao and Neil Nitin Mukesh. It is a story of two unusual friends, a wheelchair-bound chess grandmaster and a grief-stricken ATS officer, Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar, who are brought together by a peculiar twist of fate as part of a wider conspiracy that has cast a dark shadow over their lives. After all the superstar cast and intensity, unfortunately it didn’t do well in the box office.

Then released small budget movie Chalk and Duster- Starring Juhi Chawla and Shabana Azmi, story of teachers did small business as per its budget.

Airlift- Biopic on Kuwait invasion in 1990, the film follows story of Ranjit Katyal (Akshay Kumar), a Kuwait-based businessman (Inspired by Mathunny Mathews), as he carries out the evacuation of 170,000 Indians based in Kuwait during the invasion of Kuwait by Saddam Hussein (Iraq). Wonderfully directed by Raja Krishna Menon, showing the war situations with less cruelty which justified for the audience from younger age till old age. Movie starring Akshay Kumar, Nimrat Kaur, Purab Kohli, Ninad Kamat, Kumud Mishra (his role as Sanjeev Kohli is remarkable) etc., did well in box office and admired by everyone. Must watch movie of the year for every Indian, we are all proud to be Indians, a country which did biggest war evacuation, not to forget our own Air-India which created a record in the world history. Its definitely first hit of the year.

Later some adult comedy movies like Kya kool hain hum 3 &  Mastizaade starring Tushar Kapoor, Vir Das, Sunny leone etc., released which didn’t do well in box office.

Saala Khadoos- Is a sports movie based on a life of a boxing coach Adi (Madhavan), who was a failed boxer, despite being very talented, falls victim to the dirty politics in the boxing association. Years later, he is a coach for the women's boxing teams but is extremely angry and frustrated with the partiality in selection. Due to his rift with the association head Dev Khatri (Zakir Hussain), he is falsely charged with sexual harassment and transferred to Chennai. Despite the very poor infrastructure, Adi manages to find talent in a roadside fish seller Madhi (Ritika Singh), who he notices while she is thrashing the judges during her sister's tournament and trains her for the World Boxing Championship. Lots of ups and downs happens in the lives of Adi and Madhi, ends with winning of Madhi and emotional reunion of a coach and student. It’s produced by Rajkumar Hirani, so I expected it would have been made in much better way than it was, however I am not disappointed by Ritika Singh’s acting, she really did an awesome job. The movie is also dubbed in Tamil.

In the valentine month released highly expected romance movies- Fitoor (starring Aditya Roy Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Tabu), Sanam Teri Kasam (starring Harshavardhan Rana, Mawra Hocane), Sanam re (Pulkit Samrat, Yami Goutam and Urvashi Routela) but they all did small business in the box office but music of all these movies loved by everyone.

In the same month released Neerja, a biopic of Pan America flight air hostess and 80s famous Indian model Late.Neerja Bhannot, played by Sonam Kapoor. Well directed and nicely written story of a brave girl. The plot centers on the hijacking of Pan Am Flight 73 in Karachi, Pakistan, on 5 September 1986. The film is shown from the point of view of the flight's head purser, Neerja Bhanot, who let down the hijack attempt by alerting the pilots, thus grounding the plane, Neerja gave her life to help and save 359 of the 379 passengers and crew on board. While watching the film, Sonam Kapoor did good job and I imagined Neerja through out the movie. Shabana Azmi played role of Neerja's mother and her role was also wonderful.

In the month of March released Priyanka Chopra starter much awaited action flick ‘Jai Gangajal’ in which she played a cop but movie didn’t any good business, and Priyanka flew out to USA for her Soaps there! Same with Dharma productions big release ‘Kapoor & Sons’ starring Alia Bhatt, Siddharth Malhotra, Fawad Khan, Rishi Kapoor, Ratna Pathak Shah and many more., Movie was a story of two brothers who are writers and story revolves around them and Siddharth’s misunderstanding with Alia and his family, at times its boring but it’s good to watch at once for songs ‘Chull’ and ‘let's nacho’. Coming back to action, John Abraham staring Rocky Handsome also did good business, the decade ago pop song Teri toh was an added advantage for the movie.

In the month of April released R Balki’s ‘Ki & Ka’ Starring Arjun Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan. Movie has different story of a couple Kia and Kabir who falls in love and decides to marry. Kia is an ambitious woman who wants to achieve all the success with her job, where as Kabir even after being a son of successful building constructor does not desire to inherit his immense wealth and wishes to live his life as a home maker just like his mother.

The month had another big release ‘Fan’ starring Shahrukh Khan. Story of a Fan who looks just like his favorite star, whom he loved his entire life but a situation turns all his love to his hatred and he brings out hell in the life of his superstar.

May month released two more biopics of the year - ‘Azhar’ and ‘Sarbjit’. Both did well in the market. Azhar is a biopic of former Indian cricket caption Mohd.Azaruddin, whose career was ruined after his name got involved in match-fixing, movie is all about his personal life and professional life and how he frees himself from the scandal. Emran Hashmi played the lead role, Prachi Desai played his wife Naureen and Nargis Fakri played the role of Sangeeta Bijlani. Movie is well written and very well directed with clear cut information about a great player, good performance of all the actors was cherry on top.

Sarbjit is another biopic of back in 90’s man Sarbjit (Randeep Hooda) and his sister Dalbir Kaur’s (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) story. In 1990, after becoming drunk, Sarbjit accidentally crosses the border and arrives in Pakistan, where he is convicted as an Indian spy. He is alleged as Ranjit Singh, and accused of causing bomb blasts in Lahore. His claims of innocence are ignored and he is tortured for months before he is able to inform his family of his captivity through a letter. In an attempt to appease the Pakistani police, Sarbjit falsely confesses to terrorism and is promptly given a death sentence. Dalbir, determined to free her brother, her plea for justice is supported across India and condemned in Pakistan, the media in both countries continues to cover the case, causing Sarbjit's sentence to be repeatedly delayed. In 2012, after 22 years of imprisonment, Sarbjit's family is allowed to visit him in jail. The heartbreaking story makes everyone cry with wonderful performance by the leads.

June was a month of comedy Vs intense movies. Housefull 3 rocked the theaters with multi star cast Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan, Ritesh Deshmukh, Jacqueline Fernandez, Lisa Haydon, Nargis Fakhri, Nikitin Dheer, Jackie shroff and Boman Irani. Everyone made us laugh out rolling with mindless comedy. I seriously felt it was actually better version than previous Housefull movies. Well edited and well directed.

Udta Punjab was an intense movie of Drugs supply and addiction. Movie didn’t need any promotions as controversies magnetised people to the theaters. Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor, Diljit Dosanjh, everyone did their part very well but Alia Bhatt and Shahid’s acting must to be appreciated.

In the month of July Eid has come up with Salman Khan’s biggest release ‘Sultan’. Another wrestling movie of the year after small budget ‘Saala Khadoos’, Sultan a Sports-Drama was widely loved by the audience and made the business of breaking all the records of the box office and undoubtedly considered as first blockbuster of the year. Story was all about a man Sultan (Salman) who madly loves his woman Aarfa (Anushka Sharma) and does everything in his life to win her heart. People simply loved Salman Khan for his mind blowing performance.

In the same month released an adult comedy and multi starer movie ‘Great Grand Masti’ which is good to watch at once for people who loves non-veg jokes and mindless comedy, the music is really good in the movie. Later released largely promoted ‘Dishoom’ directorial debut by Rohit Dhawan (Son of David Dhawan). It’s a nice movie with all the suspense and thrills, comedy timing of Varun Dhawan and special appearance by Akshay Kumar was a surprise. John was as always did great job without changing any of his facial expressions, LOL.

August is a month which took us back in time with 2 movies. 2016 BC ‘Mohenjo Daro’, much awaited movie of Ashutosh Gowariker and Hrithik Roshan, which can also be said as comeback of both after Jodha Akbar (2008). Pooja Hegde is introduced in this. The movie is finely made, but lost some important plots over all if we think of back in time Harappa and Mohenjo Daro civilization, like belly dancers are dancing around Hrithik and extraordinary costumes are shown which can’t be imagined 4000 years ago. It is slow and at times boring. A.R.Rehman music also didn’t attract much of audience and movie just covered its cost of making.

Rustom starring Akshay Kumar and Ileana D’Cruz and Esha Gupta released in the same month was another inspired biopic from the famous 1959 case of KM Nanavati v. State of Maharashtra that changed the face of the Indian judicial system. The story dates back to the late 1950's and revolves around an Indian Naval Officer Rustom Pavri (Akshay Kumar), who is happily married to Cynthia Pavri (Ileana D'Cruz). Their marriage hits the rocks when Rustom discovers about his wife's affair with his friend Vikram Makhija (Arjan Bajwa). Movie did well in the box office and considered as one of the hit movie of the year.

September was a month of some big releases like ‘Baar Baar Dekho’ Dharma productions flick starring Siddharth Malhotra and come back movie of Katrina Kaif. Movie did good business and a people loved the decade ago’s pop song Kaala Chashma. Next release was‘Akhira’ starring Sonakshi Sinha and Konkana Sen, story of a strong girl who fights against crime. Movie did good business covering its cost and it’s good enough for single star, woman oriented movie in India.

Pink is another appreciating movie of the year, which was widely appreciated by the audience. Story was all about single girls falling in the trap of boys, who tries to rape them but gets beaten harshly by the girls, as a result the girls get harassed by the boys in different ways. Amitabh Bachchan, who played role of lawyer, saves the girls, movie did 4 times great business than its actual cost.

M.S.Dhoni the untold story a biopic of Indian cricket caption has rocked the box office with Sushant Singh Rajput’s performance. Story, screenplay, direction everything was perfect and as per me none of the actors would have given this great performance which Sushant has given as Dhoni. Disha Pathani’s role is very much appreciated by the people. Over all, movie is great to watch any number of time, especially for Dhoni’s fans.

October month released many movies including Rakaysh Omprakash Mehra’s ‘Mirzya’ introducing Harshavardhan Kapoor (Anil Kapoor’s son) Saiyami Kher. Movie didn’t do well in the box office. Apart from this, many other movies released this month but they all failed to attract the audience, including Ajay Devgun directed and acted ‘Shivaay’.

Ae dil hai mushkil’- Controversies on casting Pakistani actor Fawad Khan after the terrorist attack at Siachen, this Diwali’s biggest release and Karan Johar’s movie was on a stake at Indian Box-office. The story was all about love triangles between Ranbir, Aishwarya, Anushka and Fawad, it tickled the love bone of people for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Ranbir Kapoor’s hot scenes. Music was largely appreciated by the people and songs ‘Bulleya’ and ‘Channa Mereya’ simply loved by the listeners. Movie did good business worldwide and after all the controversies it did good in Indian market as well.

November month was release of Rock on 2, Force 2, Tum bin 2. All of them were badly beated in the box office. ‘Dear Zindagi’ starring Alia Bhatt and SRK was widely appreciated by the people for its simplicity.

December started with a small budget movie Kahani 2 starring Vidya Balan and Arjun Rampal. Story based on child abuse, thrills and suspense is similar to Kahani but coming to the business, movie just covered its cost of making.

Later came much awaited movie, Aditya Chopra directed ‘Befikre’ starring Ranveer Singh and Vani Kapoor. Movie has nothing but kisses and great locations of Paris. Story revolves around two lovers who break-up in the beginning and become friends and fall in love again. Aditya chopra bagged bad direction and story telling title for this movie after his best directions like DDLJ, Mohabbatein and Rabne Banadi Jodi. Ranveer Singh worked hard with his kisses but it didn’t suit him after his intense performance in his last Bajirao Mastani. Vani Kapoor was beautiful in Shuddh Desi Romance but her looks in this movie are made her look like an idiot!
Dangal’ what an end of the year! This movie has proved that there is nothing better than perfection. It’s again a biopic, story of Haryana’s wrestler Mahavir Singh Phugat and his daughters Geeta and Babita Phugat, who won golds for India in wrestling. 2 years of hard work by the whole team of Dangal has paid and people simply loved the movie. Wonderful performance by Amir Khan and all four girls and I simply loved the movie and recommend everyone to watch it for its Haryanvi accent, woman empowerment and hard work of Amir Khan.
Bollywood released 119 Hindi movies in the year 2016 but only few made their marks and rest were disappeared as they never existed. This is my list of movies of the year, share it if you liked it.
